The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble will present their Summer Quarter Concert on Tuesday, August 21 at 7 p.m. in Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College. This is a great opportunity to hear live jazz in one of the most acoustically splendid concert halls in the Northwest. Admission is free.
The PC Jazz Ensemble features Robbin Eaves on vocals with an eight-piece jazz band. Robbin will sing the well-known bebop classic, “Bernie’s Tune”, by pianist, Bernie Miller. The cheeky, enjoyable lyrics are by Leiber & Stoller of “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock” fame. She will also sing a gorgeous ballad, “A Timeless Place”, which is Jimmy Rowles’ classic, “The Peacocks”, with words later added by Norma Winstone.
We will also welcome a special guest on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ed Donohue. Ed serves as Director of Bands at Stevens Middle School and one of the finest jazz soloists in the Pacific Northwest. He was featured in April at Maier Concert Hall with the David Jones Trio.
The band will be performing Jimmy Van Heusen’s lovely ballad, “Like Someone in Love”, in a new instrumental arrangement by David P. Jones, the director of PC Jazz Ensemble.
Also heard will be music by Sonny Rollins, J. J. Johnson, Kenny Dorham, Benny Golson, Joe Zawinul, Walter Davis, Jr., and two brand new originals by David P. Jones
The performers in this band come from Port Angeles, Sequim, Joyce, Quilcene and Port Townsend. They represent some of the very best jazz that the North Olympic Peninsula has to offer. Robbin Eaves lives in Joyce. The Port Angeles contingent consists of Bob Bailey (alto sax), Kevin MacCartney (tenor sax and flute), Ed Donohue (trumpet), and David P. Jones (director & keyboards). From Port Townsend, we have John Adams (soprano & alto saxes and clarinet), and Lorenzo Jones (baritone sax). Our far-flung rhythm section, bassist John Sanders and drummer Tor Brandes, make the trek from Quilcene and Brinnon, respectively.
