When will I get my award letter?
Our Financial Aid Office anticipates that financial aid award letter notifications for the 2020-21 academic year will be sent to eligible students starting in mid-June 2020.
Why is the award letter later than usual for the 2020-21 year?
We are implementing a wonderful new software system, and the implementation, training, and testing of the system are delaying our processing a bit. But the end result will include improved, efficient processing, and better communication for our students.
If I get my award letter later, does this mean my application is too late for federal and state grants? No. If you are eligible for federal and state grants, these funds will be made available for your college expenses.
What does “if you’re eligible” mean in that last sentence?
Both the federal and state government have criteria that determine eligibility for grant programs. Click on the links for more information. (And check out the great news about expanded funding and eligibility in the Washington College Grant program!)
Enrollment level (how many credits you take) and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) also are factors. More information is available under the “Conditions of Award” menu on the Financial Aid home page.
Are my awards going to reduced or delayed?
Although the award letter notifications may be later than usual, this will not reduce, change, or delay your eligibility for funding.
What if I have a scholarship? What do I do if my award letter is delayed?
We do not anticipate that award disbursements will be delayed in any quarter in the 2020-21 year. If you’ve been awarded a scholarship outside of Peninsula College, you or your provider will make sure funds are delivered to the Financial Aid Office for processing. Our office will ensure the scholarship is credited to your account, and included in your award letter when the award letter becomes available.
Speaking of scholarships: Did you register for scholarships at Washboard? (Do it!)
What if I’m attending Summer Quarter 2020? When should I expect my financial aid funds?
Summer is the first quarter in the 2020-21 aid year. Although award letter notifications are expected to start in mid-June, we anticipate financial aid awards for eligible students to be disbursed on time for each quarter in 2020-21.
I haven’t submitted my Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) yet. Should I wait until June to file the FAFSA?
You should definitely not wait. If you are attending (or even thinking of attending) Peninsula College in 2020-21 you should submit your FAFSA (or WASFA—the Washington Application for Student Financial Aid, which is useful for some students who cannot file the FAFSA) as soon as possible!
If you need or want help with FAFSA or WASFA: contact the Financial Aid Office (see information below).
Why can’t I log in to the financial aid portal on the Peninsula College website?
Good news! Students will be notified via email when their Financial Aid Application (FAFSA or WASFA) has been received, and will be directed to a new site to access status and required documents. We estimate the FAFSA (or WASFA) information will be loaded into our new system around June 1, 2020. You should receive e-mail notification and “next steps” shortly thereafter. You are always welcome to contact the Financial Aid Office to check your status.
How will the later award letters effect the priority deadline for applying for financial aid?
The priority date is May 12, 2020, but that date is not an absolute deadline. It is an incentive to ensure you submitted your FAFSA and met any additional requirements early enough to ensure funding is ready for you for your first (and following) quarter at Peninsula. The Financial Aid Office uploads and processes Financial Aid Applications (FAFSAs or WASFAs) in order of their filing date. Early submission of FAFSA or WASFA is encouraged for that reason.
