An earth that sustains us while we unsustainably extract from it,” influences ceramic artist Sarah J. Conti’s craft. An exhibit of her work, entitled “Aerial Views,” is currently on display in the PUB Gallery of Art at Peninsula College’s Port Angeles campus. Access to the exhibition is very limited while the college is operating remotely, but images of the show and videos with commentary are posted to the Peninsula College PUB Gallery ART Facebook page. She will also present her work at the October 22 Studium Generale lecture held at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Conti is a ceramic sculptor currently living in Missoula, Montana. She describes her exhibit as having a focus on place and on interconnectedness.
“Birds are a crucial indicator of the health of ecosystems due to their sensitivity to change and presence in nearly every biome of the world,” Conti said. “I juxtapose species’ evolutionary adaptations and the rapidly changing earth we have impacted. Through an emphasis on native species, I want the viewer to think about the intimacy of place and our interconnectedness to creatures that have evolved over millennia to environmental niches where humans have only recently moved in.”
She earned a BFA with a sculptural emphasis from the University of Idaho in 2015. During her undergraduate years, she was granted an internship to live and work at Taylor Wilderness Research Station in Idaho's Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. This summer internship led her to map wildlife sightings and create 2-D work about wildlife and wilderness
Conti hails from western Washington and lived in Illinois for three years, completing a two-year artist in residence program at Terra Incognito ceramics studio. She then attended Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon to receive her post baccalaureate in ceramics.
This lecture is co-sponsored by the PC Art Department. Both the lecture and her exhibit were made possible through generous contributions to the PC Foundation.
The event is free and open to the public.
