In recognition of Disabilities Employment Awareness Month, Peninsula College will host a presentation by Christine Motokane, a self-advocate with autism and author of Working the Double Shift: A Young Woman’s Journey with Autism on October 20, at 6:00 pm.
Her lecture will be followed by a discussion with Priya Jayadev, Executive Director for Clallam Mosaic and Catherine McKinney, Program and Communications Director for Clallam Mosaic. The final part of the evening will be an open dialogue, and audience members will be invited to ask questions and contribute to the conversations, as well.
Motokane graduated with honors from Loyola Marymount University with a B.A. in psychology. Currently, she is employed as a special education paraeducator helping high school students with developmental disabilities. In 2014, she wrote an autobiography titled Working the Double Shift: A Young Woman’s Journey with Autism. She has spoken about her experiences with various groups and organizations and at conferences. Her goal is to spread autism acceptance and to educate others about the need to create more awareness.
Clallam Mosaic is a local nonprofit whose mission is to empower individuals with special needs.
This event is co-sponsored with Magic of Cinema and is free and open to the public. Studium Generale coordinator Kate Reavey would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Helen Lovejoy and Nitasha Lewis who coordinated the “Conversations Toward a Culture of Justice” series with Reavey this summer. Motokane’s presentation in October was inspired by her participation in a conversation with other advocates, parents, siblings, and professionals working in the area of disabilities awareness that was held in August.
Reavey says that the series she hosted with Lovejoy and Lewis helped her enormously when she was faced with curating the Studium Generale programs on the Zoom platform, and that the co-creation and co-hosting of the “Conversations” in summer have provided a set of tools for her and practices, as well, to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment online.
