Dr. Lara Starcevich will be sharing her journey of studying improv for a year while on sabbatical in the February 27th Studium Generale.
What is improv? you might be asking... Well, have you ever seen Whose Line Is It Anyway? Even the show Saturday Night Live has skits that were created from actors doing improv. Essentially, IMPROV is the art of making things up on the spot and it's a skill that we use all the time in our daily lives yet we don't realize that it IS possible to improve.
According to Starcevich, "Thinking on your feet is a life skill that can help anyone whether they want to be the next Robin Williams or not. It's about listening, taking risks, and... best of all... having fun (an activity that seems to be disappearing as we become more and more hardwired for a fast-paced, digital world)."
As part of her story, Lara will discuss not only the insights she gleamed from studying improv in Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York, but the ways in which improv can help you navigate your life with greater ease, spontaneity, and confidence! For instance...
Have you ever bumped into a potential new client and had to figure out how to get them interested in your idea?
Have you ever been to a party and been asked to make up a speech on the spot?
Have you ever been thrown into a situation and had to 'take charge' when you didn't know how?
She says, "Thinking creatively on your feet is a skill that you can master with just a little practice, encouragement and... improv!"
