After completing an undergraduate degree in Botany, Dr. Zwenger studied the microbiology of antibiotic resistance in feedlots and sewage treatment plants. He then earned a PhD from the University of Northern Colorado where he studied plant biotechnology. After teaching at Fort Hays State University, Dr. Zwenger moved to Costa Rica, and taught remotely (virtual courses) and studied medicinal tropical plants. After more than a year and a half living abroad, he returned to the United States where he discovered the Pacific Northwest. He continues to enjoy teaching online and face-to-face, doing small research projects with students, and bringing the benefits of higher education to the community.
