DEI Listening Sessions, June 2024
The following summarizes the listening sessions The Roots of Us consultants facilitated on behalf of Peninsula College. In June 2024, listening circles were conducted with students, faculty, and staff to gain deeper insight into how our community experiences Peninsula College.
Dr. Jen Self, a consultant with The Roots of Us, provided the following reflection:
“…this data is about depth, not breadth. From the circles, you are able to get deeper understanding of the participants' experiences. It is not meant to be generalizable to the entire population, but that is key importance because frequently institutions generalize to norms, and this is meant to catch the experiences that frequently go unheard.”
The participation of 11 faculty and staff members and 17 students in the 2024–25 sessions highlights the range of perspectives within the PC community. These conversations are essential to addressing challenges and fostering growth through Cultural Humility—a commitment to lifelong learning, self-reflection, and openness.
Peninsula College’s Equity Standing Committee will carefully review and analyze the feedback gathered from these sessions. Their insights will inform recommendations to the President's Cabinet, which will guide the College's Equity and Strategic Plans. This ongoing dedication to understanding and valuing diverse perspectives is vital for fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging and supporting the growth of the Peninsula College community.
