Steps to Enroll in Commercial Driver's License Courses
Registration begins 30 days prior to class start date on a first-come, first-served basis.
Upcoming Classes and Funding Information
Prior to the start of the course, students must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a valid Washington state driver’s license
- Pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical for CDL
- Pass the DOT drug screen at approved location (within 30 days of class date)
- Provide a copy of five-year driving abstract record from the Dept. of Licensing. May be obtained in person or at https://www.dol.wa.gov/licenseexpress.html.
After week 1 of class, students must provide DOL with the following to take their written test to obtain CDL permit:
- Birth certificate or valid US passport
- Proof of US residency (work authorization)
In order to graduate, students must also:
- Provide proof of education: GED, diploma, degree, or transcripts (anything post-8th grade).
- Pass the CDL Knowledge Test. Make an appointment with DOL after first week of class. Will be discussed further in classroom portion. Download a copy of Driver Guide to study before class at https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/guide.html.
Steps to Enroll in a CDL Course:
Step 1: Visit pencol.edu/community-education/cdl-license and add yourself to the sign up list so we can stay in touch.
Step 2: Apply to Peninsula College at https://pencol.formstack.com/forms/cdl_enrollment_form. Call the Office of Admissions at (360) 417-6340, option 2, if you encounter difficulties applying. You will receive a letter of admission via email within three business days. This letter will include a student ID number.
Step 3: Complete your Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam (Form MCSA-5876) for CDL. The physical exam can be good for up to two years. It can take several weeks to get an appt, so don’t delay! See your regular physician or you may contact one of the following clinics:

Step 4: Take your DOT drug test. Don’t take your test too early – results are only good for 30 days, and can take two weeks to process. When you take your drug test, ask the clinic to send the results to Camilla Rico at crico@pencol.edu. You cannot take the CDL class until we have your results. We only accept DOT Drug test results from the following clinic:

Final Step: Stop by our office or email CommunityEd@pencol.edu with the following:
- Student ID # (Step 2)
- Copy of your DOT physical Medical Examiner's Certificate (Step 3)
- Receipt of your drug test appointment (Step 4)
You will not be enrolled until we receive proof of your DOT physical, drug test and your student ID #.
