Winning essays are selected annually by faculty of the Peninsula College English department who each may nominate up to three student papers. Total prize money given out this year in the categories of narrative essay and research essay is $3000.
There are four narrative essays that (1) honor the Klallam language, (2) describe living on the streets of Seattle, (3) joke about learning to ride a motorcycle, and (4) ponder hiking in the local woods.
There are three research essays that (1) analyze jealousy in a Shakespeare play, (2) discuss Native American storytelling as a positive contributor to healthcare, and (3) explore the role social media plays in polarizing our engagement with politics.
Since 2011 donor Julie Teorey of Ann Arbor, MI has made an ongoing contribution to the college to fund the award, and more recently the Peninsula College Foundation has added to the award for the purpose of recognizing excellence in writing.
