Beta Delta Nu, PC's Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter, competed with 60 community and technical colleges across WA, AK, MT, ID, and Alberta, Canada vying for recognition of academic excellence and leadership in PTK in 2022. The group earned five of five stars in PTK’s Five-Star Chapter Plan.
The Five-Star Chapter Plan recognizes PTK chapters’ academic excellence, leadership, and engagement and provides groups an opportunity to participate in honors projects that may be submitted for consideration for PTK Hallmark Awards.
The Hallmark Awards Program reflects the scholarly ideals of Phi Theta Kappa and recognizes “superior individual and chapter achievement in Society programs,” according to the project’s mission statement. “Participation encourages excellence, reflects fairness, recognizes quality, and leads to enhanced student, advisor, and chapter development.”
PC’s Beta Delta Nu was also the recipient of four regional Hallmark Awards this year including:
• Honors in Action Project, third place
• College Project, third place
• Distinguished Chapter, second place
• Paragon Award for New Advisors, first place
To be considered for a Distinguished Chapter Award, a chapter must complete both the Honors in Action and College Projects and be in the top ten percent of chapters.
PC’s PTK Club completed a College Project in which they sponsored a Coat Drive to collect warm clothing for TAFY, a local organization that supports homeless youth in Clallam County.
The theme for this year’s Honors in Action Project was “The Art and Science of Play.” The PTK Club researched the Montessori education philosophy, wrote a research paper, and created pamphlets that can be distributed as learning resources to parents and educators.
“We want to specially recognize Amanda McKoin, Laken Folsom, Michelle Robert, and Taylor Boehme for going above and beyond with their work on the Honors in Action and College Projects,” Club Advisor Tulsi Marshall said. “We also want to recognize our active members for all their hard work helping the PTK Club reach Five Stars: Gus Brewer, Ali Dyche, John Teal, ZiTao Harper-Smith, and Zigui Harper-Smith, and we are excited to welcome new members Jerry McCann, H Sandra Ktla, Ian Coughran, and Autumn Shaw to the club.”
Students are eligible to join Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society after completing 12 college-level credits or more with a GPA of 3.7 or higher. For more information, contact Tulsi Marshall at gmarshall@pencol.edu.
