Your application was selected for a process called federal verification. As part of the Academic Year 2025-26 verification process, you are required to submit a 2023 IRS Tax Return Transcript or a signed copy of the 2023 income tax return (IRS form 1040) for each parent/stepparent whose data was included on your 25-26 FAFSA.
You must submit a copy we can keep. If your parents do not have a copy of their 2023 IRS Tax Return Transcript they can create an account on the IRS website (http://irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript) to download a copy, or call the IRS at 1 (800) 908-9946 and request a Tax Return Transcript.
If your parents did not and will not file a tax return for 2023, you must report this on the Dependent Verification Worksheet where indicated.
(Note: If you are applying for the 2024-25 academic year, submit documents for 2022 tax year.)
What to do if one or both parents did not file a tax return:
Please have your parent(s) request a Verification of Nonfiling letter from the IRS for tax year 2023. They can do this on the IRS website or by submitting IRS form 4506-T to the IRS; form 4506-T is available on our Financial Aid Forms page here: https://pencol.edu/financial-aid-office/financial-aid-forms
Submit the Verification of Nonfiling letter to the Financial Aid Office with your parent(s) W-2 forms from 2023 attached (if they had income earned from working in 2023.) If your parent is married, a Verification of Nonfiling letter is required for both parents.
REMEMBER to make sure your name and Student ID is on each page of your parent's tax transcripts.
If you have questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office at (360) 417-6390 or financialaid@pencol.edu.
