WA Sea Grant
Peninsula College and WA Sea Grant actively partner to support the needs of coastal communities on the Olympic Peninsula. Dr. Ian Miller, Coastal Hazards Specialist for Washington Sea Grant is based on the campus of Peninsula College and works to help coastal communities on the Olympic Peninsula understand and prepare for a variety of hazards, including tsunami, climate change and chronic erosion. Additionally, Dr. Miller is adjunct faculty for Peninsula College, teaching Introduction to Oceanography and working with students on individualized research projects (Author: Ian Miller).
Huxley College of the Environment
Huxley College of the Environment on the Peninsulas has been at Peninsula College since the 1993. With the closing of Rayonier Mill in Port Angeles, Washington State designated retraining funds and Huxley College sited their extension degree program at Peninsula College with the help of Battelle’s Pacific NW Marine Laboratory researchers as faculty. The program was on hiatus from 2000 to 2004. It was reinstituted with Peninsula College and Huxley on the Peninsulas receiving a five year joint National Science Foundation Research Education for Undergraduates grant. Peninsula College and Huxley on the Peninsulas students collected baseline data with various research partners on the Elwha River before the deconstruction of the Elwha dams. Huxley on the Peninsulas students continue to work with various local researchers on the Elwha, tsunami debris, coastal climate studies and a wide variety of other local projects. Classes are held in evenings at Peninsula College via interactive TV, connecting with Poulsbo and Everett students with some face to face Saturday field labs. Faculty are Peninsula College instructors, Pacific NW Marine Laboratory researchers, as well as other professionals working with state and county governments. (Author: Nancy Bluestein-Johnson)
The Feiro Marine Life Center
The Feiro Marine Life Center is the North Olympic Peninsula's premier marine education facility. Sited on the Port Angeles waterfront, the Feiro provides educational programming, features live local marine life, and sponsors citizen science research programs that are geared towards helping visitors and the community, "see under the surface". The Feiro Marine Life Center hosts Peninsula College classes and is actively seeking new opportunities to get Peninsula College students involved in marine research on the Olympic Peninsula.
