On June 22, Nova Raupp became the first recipient of the Nor'Wester Rotary Upward Bound Scholarship, earning $500 towards his future education.
Current Nor'Wester Rotary President Scott Butler, Rotarian Rob DeCou, and Kathi Pressley from the Nor'Wester Rotary have been working with Annie Carver, Interim Director of Upward Bound, in selecting a scholarship recipient and building an ongoing partnership that will include service projects and future scholarship recipients.
"The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise," DeCou said. "In particular to encourage and foster service, ethics, personal, business, and community life."
Nova plans to pursue an associate's of science degree at Peninsula College, and ultimately complete a degree in engineering. He has volunteered for the Applestock Festival, Crabfest, Upward Bound, and participates with the Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC).
Nova is also involved in competitive sports with a focus in soccer, playing on a select team that has helped him continue to build leadership, DeCou said.
